World Container - The Tragically Hip

by Jack on February 9, 2007

Well, my turn to give thanks to Downie and the rest of our favorite Canadian band, The Tragically Hip, or more affectionately known as “the hip”. If you hail from the North I’m sure you will agree that they never cease to bless us with amazing music and make us proud.

The newest album, World Container is no exception to this trend.

The album has 11 great songs, including the single “In View”. This new single is very upbeat and turns out a new style of music from the band, but still has those familiar hip styling’s and tones that you notice immediately.

The first song I heard off the album, The Lonely End of the Rink, was an instant favorite of mine. Who else could make a song about hockey sound so amazing other than the hip? The lyrics are so flowing and it’s easy to remember the frozen lake or pond you played on as a child. One of my favorite sections of the song describes just that, painting a vivid picture in your mind:

I hear your voice ‘cross a frozen lake
a voice from the end of a leaf
saying, ‘you won’t die of a thousand fakes
or be beaten by the sweetest of dekes’

The hip have a special place in my heart, not only because of the great music, but because they are such huge hockey fans, and more importantly, Gord is a huge Leafs fan. I am a Leafs fan, born and raised in Mississauga, and now living in enemy territory, Ottawa. No love from those senators fans for my friend Dan or I, who is the only person who loves the hip and the Leafs more than I do.

I would just like to say, keep it up guys, you are a big part of life in Canada, and hopefully I can catch you next time your in Ottawa. I encourage everyone to grab this album if they haven’t already.
